The concept of Categories on Amazon

Before starting work with the Description Policy it is necessary to understand the concept of Categories structure on Amazon.

There are several Categories structure representations on Amazon depending on who they are used by:

  • Categories structure for buyers;
  • Categories structure for sellers;
  • Categories structure represented in Amazon API.

That is why the same product may be found in different Amazon Categories of different Categories trees.

Example:

You sell socks.

When assigning the Amazon Category using the M2E Pro, you can find this product in:

  Sports & Outdoors > Fan Shop > Sports Collectibles > Clothing & Uniforms > Socks

A buyer, when searching via Amazon Interface, can find the same product in:

  Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry > Novelty & More > Novelty > Clothing > Men > Socks

As you are a seller, when using M2E Pro, you will work with the Categories structure developed by M2E Pro on the basis of the following data sources:

  • Amazon API;
  • Amazon Classifier Category Tree.

Remember, the Category structure on Amazon Seller Central does not coincide with the Category structure within M2E Pro. That is why you should not expect that a particular category will be found on the same path within M2E Pro as on Amazon. Try to find this category in different categories of the higher level using the logical assumption of where it may be located.

Note: Some of the Amazon Categories are not currently supported by M2E Pro. A list of available categories will be gradually expanded in the future.

Amazon Categories in terms of M2E Pro

Each Category on Amazon has two characteristics:

  • Path;
  • Browsenode ID.

Browsenode ID is a specific identifier of the Category used by Amazon which characterizes the location of the Category on the Amazon site.

Important: The Browsenode ID characterizes exactly the logical location not the path of the Category.

Example:

The category “Socks” can be found either in:

  Sports & Outdoors > Fan Shop > Sports Collectibles > Clothing & Uniforms > Socks

or in:

  Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry > Novelty & More > Novelty > Clothing > Men > Socks

You can see that different paths can be used to reach the needed category but finally, you are taken to the same logical location.

To set a category, click Edit and choose from the selection window that appears. You can choose from Recently Used Categories, to Browse a Category list or to search by keywords or Browsenode ID.

Then you should select according Product Type for your Item.

The Product Type defines the set of Specifics available. So you can change the set of Specifics by selecting different Product Type.

For example, you are selling cell phone accessories like charges. So you need a Specific like "Charging Time" but it is not available. You can go to the General tab of Description Policy and change the Product Type, so the needed Specific will become available.

The Product Types are divided by 3 possible states:

  • M2E Pro proposes 1 Product Type to be used in this Category, so it is shown automatically. But you can always change it.

  • M2E Pro proposes several Product Types to be used in this Category

  • M2E Pro does not propose any Product Type to be used in this Category.

You can also use up to 5 recently used Product Types for the current Marketplace.

The list of available Product Types depends on the Marketplace you are using and varies by them.

You can change the Product Type whenever you need, except those cases, when Category cannot be edited.

When Category and Product Type are selected, the Specifics in the Specifics tab appear for selection.

Note: the set of Specifics depends on the path of the Category. That is why it is strongly recommended to select the path which best matches the characteristics of your product.

Example:

You select the “Socks” category navigating Clothing, Shoes & Jewelry > Novelty & More > Novelty > Clothing > Men > Socks. The following specifics appear for selection: Clothing Type, Apparel Closure Type etc.

You select the “Socks” category navigating Sports & Outdoors > Fan Shop > Sports Collectibles > Clothing & Uniforms > Socks. The following specifics appear for selection: Character, Fabric Type etc.

If the Description policy is used for new ASIN/ISBN creation, the Category is obligatory for selection.

Some of the Amazon categories do not support Variational products. If you choose such a Category, M2E Pro will notify you about it.

If the Category is not selected, you are able to specify values only for Definition tab options. In case you want to add more detailed Product Information using the Specifics tab, you need to select the Category.

The selected category cannot be changed in the case:

  • Description policy is assigned to the Magento product on the basis of which new ASIN/ISBN will be created or is being created now.
  • The Description policy is assigned to Magento product on the basis of which new Child products may be created for the respective Amazon Parent product. It is done to prevent listing Amazon Parent and Amazon Child products into different categories.
  • No labels
